A comic strip called "The Dykes Next Door" had one strip where the women talked about a rating-system for movies, which I found particularly cogent. The requirements are that the movie have a) at least two women, who b) talk to each other, about c) something other than a man. When you start applying this to movies, the bland version of women on screen is made especially blatant. There is no wonder that so many people have the ridiculous stereotype of women only being consumed by boys! boys! boys!. They're not even live and nude, for the most part.
The concept of "guy" is actually quite functional as it puts a name to that liminal stage between boy and man. There is a need for a naming of that female liminality.

In the span of twelve minutes, I grabbed my just printed paper, biked half a mile, asked three girls to watch my bike please, ran inside, got my paper stamped at 4:58 and gave it in. All with 2 minutes until the fucking building closed. Amazing.
This may have something to do with the fact that I swung by a Ukrainian wine and cheese last night for a few hours to play it cool.
I was all kinds of frustrated when I got home b/c I didn't want to get to writing my paper and ella and alicia are in boston, so there was pretty much no one to talk to. But then Pasha and her friend came over and I smoked 6 cigarettes in a row as I wore off my buzz, and warmed up my cold rained-on ass. I just made such a sweet mix tape. Mmm, mix tapes have no comparison---mix cd's don't have any heart.
I'm having an inner conflict: I hate the stereotype of that typical "girl"---y'know, the kind that only talks about boys and is really whiny and all that shit. But what am I supposed to do when I run into someone that is actually like that?! I am consciouss of the fact that I just met her in a one window frame of her life, but she just made me want to clock her. This isn't really an inner conflict. I just don't like running into stereotype reinforcers. Fine, this is all really because she said "hey, that guy standing behind you...he's my boyfriend, but he just doesn't know it yet...let's wait for him [cue her grabbing my arm]" And as I turn around, who do I see? MY fake boyfriend!!!

quick update: im still alive.
ok havent posted in ages. since i last did fall break, montreal, halloween and countless nights have come and gone.
short run-down -
fall break: full of shitty movies and kids i hadnt seen in a while
montreal: such an amazing time i could write for pages. beautiful city, graffiti murals, movie night (with art movies - the most fun ive ever had while being pretentious), good food, good times, steph's friends are great, 19 drinking age, barbara kruger. learned a lot.
halloween: dressed up as she-ra and took three carfulls of kids (half of them shrooming) to the city to marisa's awesome party. freak-outs ensue (not me for once), matt and kelly turn the keg into a makeout room, people nearly die because brian keeps putting on the fog machine, smoke a one hitter with ringo starr and hear amazing stories about this crazy man's dog leading him out of the desert (or something like that), walk home leaning to the right cuz i couldnt get straight and talk about having the shining. get back to my dad's place at 5 am to find peter in my dad's cop uniform complete with hat, sweater and badge. kelly repeatedly asks the question "does me sleeping in this riot gear helmet make anyone uncomfortable?" to no one in particular.
last weekend kelly and i burned down a prairie ( but it was for it's own ecological good).
ABOUT THANKSGIVING:
who's coming home? im coming home on wednesday night and im bringing peter, andras and craig with me. you all will like select members of that group very much...and you all will love peter, because i love him. but im not going to hang out with them the whole weekend or anything. i think im gonna give them the keys to my dad's place and let them be. i really cannot wait to see all of you. i miss you all so much and love you too.
karen - im going to call you soon, but not tonight bc i have so much to do that it requires me to abuse this new substance - atarall? anyone heard of it? it's adhd meds but supposedly it focuses you like nobody's business. i think about you almost everyday - we must talk soon. i know i pulled a kit r. and didnt return your calls but tell you what, i'll call you AND i'll make you a mixtape. heh heh.
other things that dont fit:
the amps are really good (i know you discovered them first, mike).
the breeders do a cover of "happiness is a warm gun" that is really fabulous and if anyone can find a full version of it let me know!
you can all start calling me mrs. black francis (kidding steph, you can start calling frank black mr. name deleted for prosperity)
queer theory is really excellent, i highly recommend getting yourself some, reading it, sitting back and letting your mind get blown.
im really upset because postmodern feminism wont let me have my revolution, so they can suck my "dick" (they're always putting shit in quotations - what's up with "that"?)
i can't wait to drive around the ridge at extremely late hours when it's all dead and deserted with mike ray.
oh and summer plans anyone? let's talk.

On the phone, my mom, expressing her anger at that "war-monger" Sharon, said that if she ever saw him "I'd kick him...in the balls" The day you hear your mama say she'd kick someone in the balls is the day you know you're a grown up.

Things are lookin' up!!
Talked to my sister yesterday, who set all my problems straight with her wise (read: normal adult head) ways. The fact that a guy got busted at O'Hare for carrying a stun gun and various knives, does not contribute well to my apprehensions for flying home for Thanksgiving.
Insane Clown Posse---is that a Cleveland/Ohio thing? The only kids I know who are into them are both from Cleveland. Hmmm...
I'm going to pretend I'm African and fake sing to Cesaria Evora now.

all of my suitmates went to the insane clown posse show. i was going to go but someone else wanted to go more than me. Instead i watched all of these movie trailors on the quicktime web site cuz i have broadband intenret access (heheheh). I saw the trailor for this science fictio nmove K-Pax. It is yet again another boring film staring richard gere. I am more used to foreign films (these days) which give more respect to human nature (because of my film class), so i was really overstimulated when i was seeign the previews for all of these american movies which are all about being in your face and manipulating you. I am excited to see the harry potter movie and the first lord of the rings movie. They look pretty fun.
on a side note, gorillaz mary j blige, the pointers sister are red HOT and so is steph for making me a much anticipated 20th birthday mix.

A series of events have left me feeling like a child. Like a mother fucking fourth grading ball of desperation. It sucks. And it sucks that nobody posts anymore, because I don't know what's up with any of you, and I wish I could absorb myself in other peoples' lives fake-voyeur style, or immerse myself in homework, which I am going to go try and do right now.
Goodbye for a long while.

There was a Ukrainian zabava (dance) thing this weekend. My cousin stayed with me, and although his "I'm making a goth girl calendar involving liquid latex" and "I have found a caveat to your equality plan" (that would be male female equality) was a lil' perplexing, he's an alright kind of kid. Saw ye ole crush last night = rrrrright. He he, Carol, my roommate Pasha's friend, told Alicia last night that she definitely has lesbian tendencies, but they would never "let her in the club". Alicia was all kinds of "what?! why can't I be in the club?!" (but not in seriousness).
K-Lo---Your "Mc" has spread to montreal, and now to boston--Alicia called her boy Drunky McDrunk and he responded with "more like Tipsy McStumble".
Goal in life now: loving self completely without arrogance---how does one go about doing that?
